Three people were killed in two separate accidents last week in Poweshiek County.
Ana I Ramirez-Avalos, 45, and a passenger, Maria Jesus Garcia-Alcocer, 27, both Marshalltown, where killed in a two-vehicle accident at Highway 146 and the Newburg Road on Sept. 7 at around 12:56 p.m., noted the Iowa State Patrol. According to the ISP, Earl G. Weaver, 61, and a passenger, Mary J. Miller, 68, both of Conway, S.C., were eastbound on the Newburg Road in a 2022 GMC Sierra when they failed to stop at a posted stop sign at the intersection of Highway 146 and the Newburg Road, crashing into a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Ramirez-Avalos. Ramirez-Avalos and Garcia-Alcocer where transported to Ankeny by Smith Funeral Home. Weaver was transported to the Grinnell hospital by private vehicle and Miller was transported by Air EMS to Mercy Des Moines. The ISP was assisted by the Grinnell Fire and Rescue Department, Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office and Dispatch, Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, Mercy One and Midwest Ambulance. Jon Gregory Bryan, 57, of West Terre Haute, Ind., was killed in a motorcycle accident on Interstate 80 at mile marker 197 on Saturday, Sept. 9 at around 11:37 a.m. According to the ISP, Bryan was traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 on a 2013 Harley Davidson when he struck the rear of a 2023 Peterbilt semi-truck driven by Sherman Gilbert, 44, of Holbrook, Ariz. Bryan was ejected from his motorcycle and struck by a 2022 Kenworth semi-truck driven by Sidney Greenlee, 34, of Chicago, Ill. Bryan was transported to Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell by the State Medical Examiner. The ISP was assisted by the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office, the DOT and the Malcom Fire/EMS Department.
