Beginning in the Spring of 2023, BGM High School will offer Theatre Arts for Secondary Credit.
Beth Byers and Carrie Dolmage were responsible for making the argument to support student learning in the area of Theatre Arts. Byers, a College/Secondary English Teacher, with two graduate degrees, and multiple endorsements including 5-12 Speech Communication/Theatre, will teach Dramatic Techniques to those students who are interested in participating in BGM Play Productions. Dolmage, a Vocal Music Teacher and Instructional Coach, with a master's degree, will teach Musical Techniques to those students who are interested in participating in BGM Musical Theatre Productions. Both educators strongly believe that the Theatre Arts Courses will cultivate students' talents, which will provide them with learning opportunities beyond high school graduation. At the moment, the Theatre Arts Students are actively engaged in producing and acting in their own production. On April 22 and 23, 2023, the BGM Theatre Arts Students will present the production titled "Love is in the Air." The highlights of the student production, based on the theme of love, will include a brief student-authored improvisation play, which is becoming a legitimate form of Theatre. They will also perform a short play written by Byers based on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. They will end the spring production with a one act comedic mystery titled "The Mysterious Mystery of the Lost Love Letters." The comedic mystery is based on a play written by Salwa Meghjee and Samah Meghjee. The production's subject matter poses the following central questions: (1) Will Karen find love? (2) Will Elizabeth Bennet make a successful argument for women's rights in the context of 19th century marriage proposals and marry the man she loves? (3) Will Shakespeare's Love Letters be recovered or will they be lost forever? To find answers to these questions, please plan to attend the BGM 2023 spring play production.
