The Poweshiek County Historical and Genealogical Society will host a general meeting on Thursday, July 6, at 1:30 p.m. in the Carnegie library building at 200 South Third St., Montezuma. The lower level is handicapped accessible on the south side.
The program will be “Growing Up in Malcom, Iowa.” Presented by Jim White. Anyone interested in this subject is invited to attend. If you have questions, call 641-623-3322. Please leave a message because the office is only staffed on Monday and Thursday.

The Grinnell American Legion is hosting a Poweshiek County Veterans Shoot on Saturday, July 8 from 12 – 3 p.m. at Big Springs Shooting Complex near Searsboro.
The event is open to all Poweshiek County Veterans. Service rifles from the past 100-years will be available. Shoot the rifle you carried or qualified with. Rifles include: 1903 Springfield, M1 Garand, M14, M16A1, M16A2, M4 and M16A4. Cost is $10 per magazine/clip for members of a Poweshiek County American Legion or VFW Post or $15 per magazine/clip for non-members. The inaugural Grinnell Veterans 5K is slated for Saturday, July 8. The race is a chip timed, family friendly race hosted by the local Grinnell American Legion.
Runners are encouraged to wear patriotic gear. Strollers and kids are welcome, as there will be awards for a variety of age groups, in addition to the top Male and Female runners. The registration link is: http://getmeregistered.com/GrinnellVeterans5K The race will start on the north side of Central Park at 8 a.m., with runners heading north on Broad Street toward Grinnell College. Runners will loop around the Grinnell College campus, going east on 8th Avenue, turning north on East Street and back west on 10th Avenue. Runners will head back south on Broad Street, turning east on 3rd Avenue. The final stretch has runners turning north on Summer Street and returning to Central Park on 4th Avenue. |
