The Montezuma High School Varsity Cheer Squad took 15 members to the 2022 Iowa State Cheerleading Championships on Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Jacobson Exhibit Center on the Iowa State Fairgrounds. These members were freshman through seniors and this is the first time that this group of students competed in a Cheer/Dance competition at the state competition. Of these 15 members, 12 were girls and three were boys. “We were moved to an all Co-Ed division, which consisted of any Cheer/Dance teams that had at least one male athlete in them,” said cheer coach Vanessa Hinton. “We competed against schools like Grinnell and West Des Moines Valley.” Even though Montezuma didn’t place, Hinton said she can’t wait to see the improvement the students make as they plan to participate this year. “This group of kids was awesome to work with and all six of our seniors will be greatly missed,” said Hinton.
