Montezuma High School presents ‘Into the Woods,’ musical and dark comedy for four shows, Nov. 4, 5, 11 and 12

        Students at Montezuma Junior and Senior High have been working hard to bring the community Into the Woods, a challenging musical and dark comedy from James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim. The show takes everyone’s favorite storybook characters and brings them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece.
      The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results. Be careful what you wish for…
       More often than not, fairy tale characters don't feel the weight of their actions' consequences. They do as they're told, and their wishes fall into their laps. Into the Woods emphasizes that this results in discontent characters who don't understand the importance of responsibility. Everything seems to be going perfectly fine until Act 2, when the characters begin to see consequences for the choices they have made, and we get to join them for the wild ride that ensues. This show may not be suitable for children ages 4 and under.
    The cast is excited to host an elementary party for children at Montezuma Elementary students in kindergarten through 5th grade, after school on Monday, Oct. 23. To sign your student up, please pick up a flier in the office. Cast members will be teaching the students a song with choreography, having a snack, playing improv games and making a craft!

      The show is produced by Liesl Roorda, directed by Kelly Kaup with scenic design by Brian Nolton. It will run Nov, 4 and 11 at 7 p.m., Nov. 5 and 12 at 3 p.m., with a special Senior Matinee on the 12th. Tickets are available at Montezuma State Bank. Snacks will be made available during intermission by the Fine Arts Boosters and Montezuma Floral will be on site to allow families to purchase flowers for their actors and crew members.
