Jono Cheney, a veteran and former Corporal with the United States Marine Corp. and Poweshiek County Sheriff Deputy, took Memorial Day to heart. Cheney, who served two combat tours in Iraq, attached an American Flag to a homemade wooden flag pole he made using extra flag clips and then ran five miles in full military gear from his rural Deep River home to the Goldenrod Cemetery and back to honor the fallen. “My cousin, D.J. Sutfin, a United States Marine Corp. veteran, and I usually do the Murph (crossfit) workout to honor the fallen,” said Cheney. “But since the sickness and all we couldn’t get together, so I decided to honor the fallen in my own way.”
