The Montezuma American Legion Post 169 recently honored long-time member, Ron Curry, 94, with a 75-year membership certificate.
The presentation was done on Thursday, Aug. 14 at the new Montezuma American Legion Hall.
Curry, who lives in Grinnell, served two years in the U.S. Army from 1952 – 54 during the Korean War. He was stationed in Munich, Germany where he was a half tank driver. The vehicle had wheels on the front and tracks in the back and included four 50-caliber guns.
“They can all fire at the same time,” said Curry of the guns.
Curry was born and raised in the Montezuma/Barnes City area. He attended school at Browntown School south of Montezuma (Poweshiek and Mahaska county line) where he completed the 8th grade.
“I started farming with my dad after that,” Curry said.
After the war, Curry joined the Grinnell American Legion, later transferring his membership to the Montezuma American Legion.
Curry and his wife, Erma Lou, married in 1951 and raised three girls – Rhonda (Sue), Kimberly (Kim) and Lori. The couple was married for 64 years when Erma Lou passed away in 2016.
Curry has five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Curry recently took part in the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight.
When asked what this honor means to him, Curry said, “It means a lot.”
