The GHS Musical Theatre production of "How to Succeed..." was one of two groups in that class to bring home Division 1 ratings and all-state honors. The production featured Elisabeth Kelley-Chown, Mackenzie Kohl, Anna Schubert, Catherine Schubert, Peyton Stensrud, and Peyton Stevenson, and was directed by Hosbond and Flinspach with Gookin assisting. “Sweeney Todd” featuring Joel Dressler and Maggie Kaup and was was the musical theatre production to earn all-state honors. Grinnell High School brought 13 groups to the State Large Group Speech Contest held at Cedar Rapids Washington High School on Saturday, Feb. 4. This was one of four contests held across the state as part of the Iowa High School Speech Association contest series. All 13 Grinnell entries were awarded overall Division I ratings. Of the 13 entries, six groups were selected for All-State honors and will perform at the All-State Festival to be held at Iowa State University on Saturday, Feb. 18. (All groups also received overall Division I ratings at the State contest.) Of significant note is that 30 out of the 60 student participants on the team this year were bestowed All-State honors, amounting to exactly one half of the team. For the sixth year in a row Choral Reading received an All-State nomination. “Lift,” written and directed by Kevin Hosbond, features Chloe Alger, Sarah Ashing, Emily Cooper, Maddie Davis, Joel Dressler, Kiran Elfenbein, Mary Jacobson, Kiran Jones, Maggie Kaup, Britt Kifer, Ketsia Kiphanzu, Erin Nicklas, Judith Perez-Valentin, Ezra Praitis Hill, and Peter Simpson. The Readers Theatre “The End of the Road,” directed by Jennie Flinspach, will also perform at All-State. It features Claire Behrens, Tiernan Boggs, Tobias Crandall, Roman Mackenzie, Reece Madren, Charlie Nicklas, Natalie Nieuwsma, Catherine Schubert, Cameron Thompson, and Jeslyn Voogd. Representing GHS at All-State in the area of Group Mime is the cast of “The Heist” which features Chloe Alger, Maddie Davis, Kiran Elfenbein, Kalli Hart, Olivia Mick, and Cora Miller. In the area of Solo Mime All-State honors were bestowed upon performers Cora Miller for “3017: An Escape Tale” and Kalli Hart for “My Very First Dragon.” All pieces were written and directed by Hosbond with the ensemble. Finally, in the area of Musical Theatre, Will Dahlby Albright, Olivia Mick, and Brody Petig will perform “Young Frankenstein” at the All-State Festival. This piece was directed by Hosbond with assistance from Gookin. In the digital category of Short Film, both entries received overall Division I ratings at the state contest. The films were “Intus et Extra” by Kaia Chang Roper, Ezra Praitis Hill, Ava Valencic, and “A Petal in Time” by Ani Ford, Janae Hall, Livie Herbers, Grace Kiphanzu, Chris MacArtney, and Aaron Shinefield. Ms. Flinspach advised both groups. Two Group Improvisation teams directed by Flinspach also received overall Division I ratings. The team “Tip of the Iceberg” features Will Dahlby Albright, Reece Madren, and Owen Shepardson, and “The Fairy Fleet” features Emma Lewis, Roman Mackenzie, and Jeslyn Voogd. The Ensemble Acting scene “Romantic Comedy,” directed by Flinspach and featuring Tiernan Boggs and Rome Tews, also earned a Division I rating at the state contest. BGM Speech and Drama recently participated in the IHSSA (Iowa High School Speech Association) Large Group District Contest on Saturday, Jan. 21 at South Tama High School. Kadon Folkmann, Marlee Sharpe, Addison Day, Lailyn Dean and Abby Smith have qualified to compete at the Iowa High School Speech Association’s Large Group State Contest on Feb. 4. All the students performed in the area of Group Improvisation and received a Rating I for their performances. GHS entered a Choral Reading production written and directed by Kevin Hosbond titled “Lift.” It features Chloe Alger, Sarah Ashing, Emily Cooper, Maddie Davis, Joel Dressler, Kiran Elfenbein, Mary Jacobson, Kiran Jones, Maggie Kaup, Britt Kifer, Ketsia Kiphanzu, Erin Nicklas, Judith Perez-Valentin, Ezra Praitis Hill, and Peter Simpson, and also received a Division I rating. Grinnell High School registered 61 students across 17 entries for its first District Large Group speech contest held at South Tama High School on Saturday, Jan. 21. This was the first level of competition as part of the Iowa High School Speech Association’s collection of contests held across the state. Of the 17 entries, three received a Division II rating, one received a Division IV rating, and 13 were awarded Division I ratings which advances those groups to the State Large Group contest to be held at Cedar Rapids Washington on Feb. 4. Assisting head coach Kevin Hosbond is fellow English teacher Jennie Flinspach. Also assisting is volunteer coach Michael Gookin who helps with music direction and GHS alum Kenny Phipps who assisted with set construction. In keeping with last year’s teaming, Flinspach and Hosbond decided to combine the 9th and varsity teams into one group. This allowed them to better fill certain events, such as musical theatre and one-act play, and allowed it to serve as a training ground for the 9th graders by casting them beside their upper level peers. The team entered one Radio Broadcast this year. The “BROS: Daily Chat” served as a sequel to last year’s entry and starred Billy Lopatto and Owen Shepardson with newcomer Alexander Scheffert. The trio earned a Division II rating. Continuing in the digital categories, GHS entered three Short Films. In the past only two were allowed, but this new rule was approved by the IHSSA last year after a proposal put forth by Hosbond and other coaches across the state to allow for more student involvement. “Tales of the Unusual” by Max Deitrich, Maddie Eddins, Isaac Hammond, Khloe Moore, RJ Raney, Elidi Zaret, and Isaac Zaret earned a Division II rating. BGM’s Sawyer Callahan won the 126-pound bracket at districts and moves on to wrestle at state on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at Wells Fargo in Des Moines. He will wrestle at 9 a.m. Briar Kriegel also made the podium bringing home 3rd at 120 pounds. "Words are hard to come by to express our thanks and appreciation to Cooper Winter and Connor Cooling for the time and commitment they have given throughout their careers," noted Coach Bauman. The Grinnell Tiger wrestling team traveled to Huxley on Saturday, Feb. 11 to compete in the 2A District 2 wrestling tournament to punch their ticket to state. Gene Blalock (285) bullied his way to the finals and upset the formerly undefeated and number 1 ranked heavyweight in 2A to secure his victory. In overtime no less! Logan McDonald (126) and Maxwell Mintle (152) both lost their finals match and would have a wrestle back for true second. Logan won a convincing 17-4 major decision, securing runner up and punching his ticket to state for the first time in his career. Maxwell overcame some adversity to win his wrestle back 9-2, joining his teammates in their trip to Wells Fargo. His second qualification of his career. Class 2A wrestling action gets underway at 1:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. Fourth Place Finishers: Matthew Mintle (138), Alex Peiffer (138), Teylor Doty (160), and Oliver Louden (195) would all go 2-2 on the day. Big Shout Out to our two seniors that ended their seasons yesterday. Oliver Louden would finish his senior year with 35 wins, while joining the 100-win club. Darren Schulte (145) a first year wrestler, never let up on the gas regardless of who stepped on the line across from him. Both tremendous kids who left a positive mark on the program. Something good is roaring your way. Grinnell Community Theatre is hosting additions for the youth production of “The Lion King Jr.,” directed by Debby Pohlson and Tom Lacina, April 26-30.

North Mahaska will play GMG at NM High School also on Monday while Belle Plaine plays Don Bosco and Keota takes on North Tama. Game time is 7 p.m for all area schools.
